Michelin LTX M/S Review

Michelin LTX MS tire Review

One of the reasons why Michelin Tires have remained top of the rank as a leading name in the automobile industry is its ability to improve on its product.

Michelin Defender LTX

The French tire manufacturer showed this ability with the Michelin Defender LTX M/S. According to the tire brand, the Michelin LTX M/S combines the impressive tread design of the Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 and a new EverTread compound technology to give drivers one of the best highway tires that the automobile world has seen.

The Michelin Defender LTX M/S also comes with an excellent tread life, an all-season safety as well a warranty for long mileage. The manufacturer claimed that it was able to embed all of these Defender ltx features into the tire due to its Michelin Total Performance Package.

What this means is that Michelin engineers paid attention to all aspects of the tire’s performance as opposed to the popular trend of focusing on certain features such as tread life. We think this paid off as many drivers prefer these over others such as the Goodyear wrangler sr.

Features and Benefits

Total Performance Package

This is one of the major highlights of this tire. This package ensures that the tire incorporates all the necessary features from the design to the manufacturing stage. This happens because the designers and engineers working on the tire focused on all the aspects of the tire’s performance.

One of the effects of the Total Performance Package is the EverTread Compound. This compound comes in form of a molded symmetric tread design featuring high-density 3D Active Sipes and stable tread blocks.

The function of the compound is to ensure that the tire can hold up tougher conditions for longer periods, meaning you’ll get a tougher and longer lasting tire!

The tread pattern also offers an enhanced all-season traction performance to drivers. This includes wet traction and braking as well as dry handling. This pattern also comes with four wide circumferential grooves and open shoulder blocks. These components help with the water evacuation and increase the resistance to hydroplaning to keep you safe even on slick roads.

Winter Tires

It is important to state that the Michelin Defender LTX M/S is not a winter tire. It doesn’t have the 3PMSF symbol that is required. The 3PMSF symbol stands for Three Peak Mountain SnowFlake and it is a sign that shows that a tire is safe for use in winter conditions.

However, this doesn’t mean that the Michelin Defender LTX M/S doesn’t have snow traction, it only means that this tire isn’t a true winter or snow tire tested, like others you’d find in a tire shop.

Tread Wear Indicators

As an all-season tire, the Michelin Defender LTX M/S comes with treadwear indicators. These indicators show the extent to which the tread has been used and how well the tires will perform in wet conditions.

The addition of the TWIs is a safety and performance decision. Tires with worn-out tread perform poorly and are dangerous especially on wet surfaces. For this tire, the minimum tread is 1.6mm or 2/32 inches. You will find the TWIs in the circumferential grooves of the tire, and they flush with the surface of the tire when the minimum tread is reached. When this happens it is advisable to replace the tires or avoid driving on wet surfaces.

However, you need not worry about the durability of the tires, as the Michelin Defender LTX M/S is one of the long-lasting all-season highway tires in the market.

You also get a warranty on the Defender LTX tires depending on the speed rating. The T and H speed-rated tires have a 70,000-mile warranty while the R-rated tires have a 50,000-mile warranty.

Dry Traction

This tire offers one of the best dry traction performances that you will ever find. The tires deliver a superb performance regardless of the payloads. One of the areas where the tire impresses drivers is the steering responsiveness which is excellent and top-notch. It also offers great cornering ability and stability at high speed. The braking distance is also short even with higher payloads.

Wet Traction

The Defender LTX M/S also offers impressive performance on wet roads and surfaces. The resistance to hydroplaning offered by this tire is so great, even deep puddles won’t affect its performance.

The presence of the EverTread compound also enhanced the performance of the tires, especially in damp conditions. As it is with the dry traction, the tire offers a great cornering grip, stability at high speeds, and a short braking distance.

Off-Road Driving

The Michelin Defender LTX M/S is built for highway driving and not off-road driving. However, you are covered when driving on hardpacked surfaces as the tire has adequate features to make the experience comfortable. The tire comes with tough casings that help prevent cuts from sharp edges of rocks.

So while the traction may not be at par with that of other terrains, you will enjoy the off-road driving with the Michelin Defender LTX M/S.

Comfort and Road Noise

This is another area where the tires excel. Michelin tried its best to reduce highway noise with this tire and we are pleased to tell you that they succeeded at it. Coupled with an impressive ride quality that makes driving fun and enjoyable without a noisy tire.
