As a young boy in the early Seventies, I lived for ABC’s Wide World of Sports. That show brought the most incredible characters into my life, names like Garlits, Andretti, Petty and other racers became friends instead of just names the adults in my life spoke about. The most colourful of the bunch however was Evel Knievel. I LOVED watching that guy jump over stuff. I was in awe of his ability to walk away (sort of) from the most insane crashes.
I was six years old when Knievel made his attempt to jump. I set myself up in front of the TV with my Evel Knievel wind up motorcycle and Scramble Van. I was frantic with anticipation as I watched the daredevil get lifted into the Sky Cycle and then shocked when the chute popped too early. I was elated when my hero cheated death yet again!
The remains of the Skycycle X-2 ended up in Niagara Falls, as the anchor to what might just be the ultimate Evel Knievel collection. Located in the Old Emporium antique shop, the entire collection is now up for sale. Along with the Skycycle are rare motorcycles and tons of Evel memorabilia. The collection is bundled with a bunch of oddities that were originally featured on the show That’s Incredible.
Canadian video guru Danny Bailey has put together the following video showcasing all of the cool that is in the collection.
If you have never seen the original jump, then you should also give this one a look.
