Regular readers know that I have a soft spot for Volvos of the brick variety, having owned four of the Swedish machines from the boxy but good era. My Wife’s fave was a super cool 1984 240 Turbo wagon, silver with blue interior and all the correct blacked out trim and the GLT wheels.
The 245 or 5 door 240, was the pinnacle of everything that made Volvo cool. When fitted with a manual transmission, they could be a blast to drive, or would happily save the driver gas money all day long. As Volvo’s North American consumers became a bit more mainstream, the sale of automatics became more common and gradually the stick vanished from the 245 lineup. In later years, typically the row-your-own 240 was only available in the base DL model.
Which brings me to the absolutely lovely 1989 Volvo 240 DL you see above. This as close to perfect you will find 240 has just 66,583 miles on the clock. It easily has another 500K left in it! The seller, European Cars in Philly, however seems to have had a problem with fumes in the showroom, as they have listed their “buy it now” price on ebay as $18,950.00.
Nineteen grand for a 240 DL? Sure, it is a stick, but come on! I could see five, or maybe even six, but NINETEEN?
What do you think, are the guys at this dealership crazy or is this a fair market price? Or, is this insane price a ploy to light up the internet and drive traffic to the dealer’s ebay profile?
