When Kahnawake, Quebec resident Dexter Stacey began racing in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series he was just a teenager. 17 if I recall correctly. He quickly became a favourite of photographers, as we knew that if we kept our lens on the yellow number 55, pretty soon there would be some sort of excitement. The young driver was fast when he was facing the right way, but his youthful exuberance often got the better of him. While his propensity for crashing was an annoyance to other teams, it never really became much of an issue for others because the kid was just so damn nice.
In the years since, Stacey has done a bunch of racing with the big boys down south, most recently was yesterday in the Ford Ecoboost 200 round of the Camping World Truck Series at Homestead, near Miami.
The weekend didn’t get off to a great start for Stacey, as a spin in the number 1 truck, followed by a bizarre return trip the wrong way to the pit exit, derailed his qualifying efforts. Starting in last place, Stacey battled his way from 32 position to finish 24th. Perhaps more importantly, there wasn’t a scratch on the truck!
