The 2015 running of the Dakar Rally has come to a close. There are many stories to be told and many videos to be shared, most of which I will get to during the week.
For your Sunday coffee time, I thought I would share this terrifying video of Canadian owned El Martillo Racing crashing out of the event on stage seven. The driving team consists of Albertan Matt Campbell and Mexicans Luis “Fito” Ramirez and Nicholas Ambriz and fortunately none of them were injured beyond some nasty bruises.
From the team blog:
At the km 50 marked on the road book of the 7th stage, the first part of the marathon stage, the water crossing where the accident happened was marked as “Danger 2”, when in fact it should’ve “Danger 4” at least. Besides that, there was a difference of about 200 meters between the mark of the water crossing and the spot where is in fact.
The race car was moving at a speed of 174 km/h when suddenly they found the water cut 5 feet deep… There was not much to do but hang on and resist the crash. The affectations are quite notable, the car was completely destroyed.
Campbell, Ramirez and Ambriz had better be buying beer for the truck builders at least, because the outcome of this incident could have been much worse.
