It seems like forever that automotive journalists in North America have been begging auto manufacturers to bring a European style wagon to this continent. A stylish, practical, affordable and all wheel drive wagon that is diesel powered and features a manual transmission. I can remember reading journalists rants about the lack of availability of such a vehicle in Canada as a teenager in the Eighties. It seems like the folks at Volkswagen Canada might be on the verge of making every car scribe’s dream come true.
Next March, we will see the seventh generation Golf Sportwagon arrive in Canadian showrooms. VW Canada’s Media Relations Manager, Thomas Tetzlaff tells me that the car will be available with front wheel drive only and with a choice of a 1.8TSI or 2.0 TDI Clean Diesel engine. Both engine will be available with either a manual or automatic transmission.
Built in Volkswagen’s Puebla, Mexico plant, the Sportwagon will be available with all wheel drive beginning in 2016 and the company “will also offer an “Alltrack” version when AWD becomes available” says Tetzlaff. Engine and transmission availability for both of these are still in the planning stages, however the company is hopeful that we will have the same choices as are available in the FWD version.
Methinks that many Canadian auto journalists are hopeful too. I know I am!
