Roughly 2,500 taxi drivers in Toronto are planning a strike next weekend, similar to the one they organized in December. In that action, cabbies brought the downtown area surrounding the Queen and Bay intersections, to a standstill for the better part of the day.
The challenge this time is that next weekend Toronto plays host to the NBA All Stars game and the downtown core will be jammed full of sports tourists. On top of that, next Monday is Family Day, meaning that many Torontonians will be attempting to get around town to enjoy the day off.
In this case, the taxi drivers are planning to show their displeasure with Toronto Mayor John Tory’s refusal to take legal action against Uber.
Perhaps instead of staging protests, the taxi industry should get together and try to figure out how to re-build this city’s broken cab industry so that it works for everyone.
