The Canadian-built Toyota Corolla delivers on 40 year legacy of proven value with new styling, standard safety systems and equipment and fresh options packages

The Canadian-built Toyota Corolla delivers on 40 year legacy of proven value with new styling, standard safety systems and equipment and fresh options packages

(TORONTO) – The Toyota Corolla, significantly refreshed for the 2011 model year, continues to raise the bar when it comes to safety, styling, fun-to-drive performance, fuel efficiency and proven value. In addition to a restyled, sportier exterior, Canadian drivers will also have the added confidence of Toyota’s Star Safety System, now standard on every 2011 Toyota, including Corolla.

“The Corolla remains one of the most trusted and popular vehicles, with over 1 million sold in Canada over more than 40 years. For 2011, Corolla builds on the features Canadians love, adding more than 300 new parts – a significant revision, given that the last full model change also added 1,000 new parts,” said Warren Orton, Director at Toyota Canada Inc. “Every Corolla sold in Canada is built in Canada; with 80 per cent of all Corollas sold here over the last 20 years still on the road today, the quality and reliability of this model speaks for itself.”

With the Star Safety System as standard, the 2011 Corolla delivers added peace of mind to Canadian drivers. Along with a choice of four front-wheel-drive models featuring an option of two engine sizes, manual or automatic transmissions, new convenience features and updated options packages for 2011 – there’s a Corolla for everyone.

Highlights for 2011

· All models are standard equipped with the Toyota Star Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) enhancements, and Toyota’s Smart Stop Technology;

· All models feature a fresh look with redesigned headlamps, tail lamps, front grille, front and rear bumpers, and trunk lid;

· The Corolla S and Corolla XRS feature a redesigned flat-bottom steering wheel, an upgraded audio system with a Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD), integrated XM satellite radio, USB audio input and Bluetooth capability, a new combination meter design and gauges enhanced with chrome rings;

· The Corolla S and Corolla LE feature newly styled 16” wheels;

· In addition to the redesigned 16-inch wheels, the Corolla LE also receives new scuff plates and two fresh options packages adding new comfort and convenience choices, including heated cloth seats;

· Two new exterior colours – Sandy Beach Metallic and Nautical Blue Metallic.

Safety

Every Corolla is generously equipped with a suite of active and passive safety systems:

· All 2011 Toyota Corolla models come standard equipped with the Star Safety System™. This integration of active safety features is designed to protect occupants by helping drivers avoid accidents in the first place. The Star Safety System™ includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC),1 Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA)2 and Smart Stop Technology (SST).3

· The Corolla is engineered to absorb and disperse impact energy throughout the entire body structure, including front and rear crumple zones. Strengthened door beltline reinforcements help share the impact load, which in side impacts is also directed to the underbody.

· Disc brakes all around feature ventilated discs up front to shed heat effectively in all braking situations;

· All Corolla models are equipped with six standard airbags, including advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, and front-and-rear side-curtain airbags. Seatbelt pretensioners retract the seat belt at the time of a frontal collision, and the dual-stage force limiter helps limit the seat belt force applied to the passenger’s chest. Front seats integrate active headrests. If the vehicle is struck from the rear with sufficient force, a cable-actuated mechanism in the active front headrest moves the headrest upward and forward to help limit the movement of the occupant’s head. The Corolla also features an energy-absorbing steering column.

Power and performance

Two engine sizes let Canadian drivers pick the performance they want and the efficiency they need.

The Toyota Corolla CE, Corolla LE and Corolla S are fitted with a powerful yet efficient 1.8L four-cylinder engine with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i) that delivers 132 peak horsepower and up to 128 lb-ft of torque.

For even more driving fun, the Corolla XRS sports a 2.4L four-cylinder with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) that generates up to 158 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque.

Toyota engineers have enhanced both engines for performance and efficiency with systems such as the Direct Injection System (DIS) and Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence (ETCS-i).

Three transmissions are offered, depending on model. A five-speed manual transmission features overdrive. A four-speed automatic and five-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT) sport overdrive, while the five-speed also features a sequential multi-mode shifter. Available transmissions by model, with fuel efficiency (city/highway combined), are listed below:

· Corolla CE, Corolla S :: 1.8 L 4-cyl :: 5-speed manual :: 6.6 L / 100 KM

· Corolla CE, Corolla S, Corolla LE :: 1.8 L 4-cyl :: 4-speed auto ECT :: 6.8 L / 100 KM

· Corolla XRS :: 2.4 L 4-cyl :: 5-speed manual :: 8.2 L / 100 KM

· Corolla XRS :: 2.4 L 4-cyl :: 5-speed auto ECT :: 8.1 L / 100 KM

All Corolla models achieve a Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions rating.

Handling and control

Can a compact sedan be fun to drive? Absolutely, especially when sophisticated engineering and advanced technology deliver a driving experience.

Every Corolla features highly responsive Electric Power Steering, which uses a compact motor, speed reducer and torque sensor built into the steering column. The system varies the amount of assistance according to engine RPM and vehicle speed. The result is appropriate weight and responsiveness at higher speeds, and light effort at low speeds. Electric power steering reduces parasitic losses to the engine, thereby aiding fuel economy. It is also environmentally efficient, because it does not require hydraulic oil.

The smooth-riding Corolla is built around a stiff body structure that relies on high tensile-strength steel, gussets and cross members for its strength, rigidity and lightweight construction. Front suspension is composed of a compact, rigid L-arm-type MacPherson strut with a stabilizer bar. The Corolla’s torsion beam rear suspension employs a coil-over-shock arrangement that allows efficient packaging along with solid handling and excellent ride comfort. The Corolla XRS has an enhanced suspension with a front strut tower bar, and a rear that is sport tuned.

Exterior Design

The Corolla’s design, created with input from styling studios in Turin, Italy, strikes a sporty profile. New 2011 exterior-design changes were made on the front bumper, radiator grille, front lower grille, headlamps, trunk lid, rear license garnish, rear combination lamp, rear bumper and reflex reflector. The Corolla provides room for five, and its 12.3 cu. ft. trunk rivals midsize cars’ trunks in capacity. The sporty profile is the result of pulling the A-pillar forward and the C-pillar rearward, which also enhances aerodynamic performance for optimal fuel efficiency.

Just above the dense mesh grille, an interlayer of anti-chipping coating is used to help minimize paint damage from stone chips. The side-view mirrors have increased in size for excellent visibility. The standard body kit on S the model adds a sporty look while also enhancing aerodynamics. The kit includes a front spoiler, rocker moldings, and upper and lower rear spoilers. Engine undercovers improve air management under the car on all models.

Interior Design

The 2011 Corolla features a number of new interior design features that enhance its distinctive style. A new seat color and pattern enhances Corolla’s contemporary looks, while the combination meter design on Corolla S and XRS models has been changed with the aim of enhancing clarity. The instrument panel upper and door trim upper color has been changed, revealing a sophisticated cabin appearance. A newly designed steering wheel on Corolla S and XRS models provides a sporty image.

The Corolla’s driving position and front seats are tailored to a wider range of driver heights. A standard tilt and telescope steering wheel in all models makes it easy for taller drivers to find a comfortable position.

A multi-information display presents a variety of information, including outside temperature, instant fuel economy, average fuel economy, average speed and travel distance.

The Corolla’s rear bench seat offers space and comfort for three adults. Careful attention to exhaust system routing provides a nearly flat rear floor, enhancing comfort for the middle passenger.

A variety of useable, easy-to-reach storage spaces provide convenience and usability inside the Corolla. These include centre console side pockets; a storage box above the usual glove box; front and rear door pockets that can safely hold 500 mL bottles; a console box with a large-capacity main tray and a smaller accessory tray; and a rear-seat centre armrest with an integral drink holder.

Generous comfort and convenience features, a choice of options packages

Every 2011 Corolla is well equipped with comfort, convenience and style amenities. All models feature: Audio systems with a CD player with MP3/WMA capability, auxiliary audio input jack, title display, digital signal processor, and more; a dust/pollen/odour filter and rear seat heater ducts; a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat; an instrument cluster featuring tachometer, outside temperature gauge, and digital clock; a tilting/telescoping steering column; dual vanity mirrors; and tinted glass; plenty of in-cabin storage, including opening door pockets, upper and lower glove box, retractable coat hooks and purse hanger, centre console storage pockets, front and rear door integrated bottle holders, a driver’s coin case compartment, door map pockets, side storage compartments in the trunk, front and rear cup-holders and more; a 12-volt accessory power outlet; dual power remote heated and foldable exterior mirrors; and more.

Chevrolet Cruze wins Best New Small Car over $21,000 category

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario (Friday, October 29, 2010) – Chevrolet Canada was today honoured by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), which named the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze as the “Best New Small Car over $21,000.”

“To win top spot in the category that represents the biggest segment in Canada, after a head-to-head comparison with the best of the competition, is critically important for any manufacturer and marks a key milestone for the new product executions from Chevrolet,” said Kevin Williams, president and managing director, GM Canada. “Our challenge to Canadian compact buyers is this: Put the Cruze on your shopping list and compare it against the current segment leaders. With sales success in 60 countries around the world, the Cruze is a testament to Chevrolet’s ability to compete and win with small, fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive cars that are ideally suited to the everyday driving needs of consumers.

This latest award for the Cruze results from recent back-to-back driving evaluations of 48 new vehicles at the AJAC Test Fest evaluation – the foundation of the Canadian Car of the Year Awards (CCOTY) program. Seventy (70) of Canada’s top automotive journalists judged this year’s competition which aims to provide consumers with sound, comparative information on new vehicles.

The Cruze, which launched in Canadian dealerships earlier this week, stands alone in the segment with 10 standard airbags and delivers excellent fuel efficiency, top-quality infotainment plus a host of other comfort and safety features which are ideally suited to the needs of compact buyers. With a starting price of just $14,995, plus a free Apple iPad or winter tires for orders placed before January 10, 2011, the all-new Chevrolet Cruze aims to change the way Canadians look at compact cars.

2011 Hyundai Sonata: Stylish look for a value price

“That’s a Hyundai?”

I’ve heard this statement from the media and consumers so many times it is almost becoming a cliche. During our week with the 2011 Hyundai Sonata, I heard it even more often and with more emphasis. Someone even asked me what model of Mercedes I was driving!

To say Hyundai has come a long way over the past 3 decades would be a rather large understatement. At a time when designers are scrambling to find ways to make the mid level sedan stand out from the competition, the stylists at Hyundai have managed to pen a design that not only stands out, but stands above the segment. Our GL model tester wore steel wheels with hubcaps, but with the optional alloys, the Sonata could easily pass for a car that sells for double the $24,249 sticker.

The interior styling is as crisp and modern as the exterior, with attractive surfaces that fit well and have a quality feel. There is none of the hard edged plastic that is prevalent in some of the traditional domestic models in the same segment.

As a mid level model, the seating is clad in rather plain but nice enough fabric. Where the Sonata sets itself apart though is in the interior space. One passenger who was well over 6” tall, commented that the back seat had far more legroom than his full size Benz. In fact, there was a good 4” between his knees and the front seat back. It goes without saying that there is more than enough space for 3 kids to be comfortable back there.

I often find that cloth seats don’t offer enough support for my bad back on a long drive. I drove the Sonata from Toronto to Ottawa and my back felt great when I arrived.

North American consumers often choose SUV’s over sedans because of the utility factor. In other word, many sedans just don’t have enough cargo space. The trunk in the Sonata is huge and the opening is large enough to actually make the space useable.

The 2011 Sonata is powered by a 2.4l 4 cylinder that is mated to a 6 speed automatic that shifts so smoothly that it almost feels like a CVT. While not an outright performance sedan, the Sonata moves along smartly and there is more than enough oomph for most drivers.

On the road, the Sonata is confident and stable, handling Ontario’s rather challenging highways with ease. NVH engineers have done their homework on this one, as the Sonata’s interior is art gallery quiet, which allows one to enjoy their favourite road tunes to their fullest.

Many entry level vehicles skimp on the features, forcing consumers to choose more expensive option groups to get the features that many of us consider must haves these days. Hyundai has obviously put some thought into the content Canadians expect, as the Sonata is full of goodies. The audio system includes XM satellite, CD, iPod/mp3 input and most importantly, bluetooth connectivity. Power windows, locks and air conditioning are all standard, as is keyless remote with security system.

The mid-level sedan segment offers some curious choices. A similarly equipped Mazda6 lists for $23,195. At $1,100 less than the Hyundai, it is a natural competitor. Having driven both in the same trim level, I have to say I would be hard pressed to make a choice. I think the Sonata’s styling would win me over. At the other end of the scale are the Camry and Accord which are priced at between $700 to $1,200 higher than the Sonata and many of the conveniences that the Mazda and Hyundai offer are optional or not even offered. Most glaring here for me is that bluetooth isn’t offered on the Accord LX. In today’s world, that is just unacceptable.

With the 2011 Sonata, Hyundai is bringing style, comfort, utility and value to the family sedan market. Consumers who are in the market for this type of car owe it to themselves to put old biases aside and visit the local Hyundai dealership. They may just find they utter that same cliche.

Honda Civic Retains Honour as Canada’s Top-Selling Car

Of all the cars the tuner kids love, none is more popular than the Honda Civic. Part of the reason they love them so much is that they can buy a 10 year old model and still have a reliable car that is fun to drive. Those 10 year old cars have to come from somewhere though.

For many of the same reasons, new car buyers of all ages have chosen the Civic for years. So many buyers and so many years in fact that the Civic has now been the top selling car in Canada for 12 years running. For 2009 that equals 62,654 new Civics on Canadian roads! Many of those were also built in Canada.

Well done Honda!
