Porsche announces reduced prices for Canadian market

Effective immediately, price drop includes vehicles and options, making Porsche vehicles more accessible than ever before

MISSISSAUGA – January 4, 2011 — In recognition of the continuing strength of the Canadian dollar, Porsche Canada today announced a major price reduction, dropping base prices on all car lines by an average of $5,200.

The move comes on the heels of measures already introduced over the last year, which offer Canadian Porsche customers better value than ever before. Last spring, the company added standard equipment across the lineup, while reducing the prices of its sports car models. Value option packages, combining the most popular options at reduced prices, were also introduced.

“Porsche Canada has historically been the first to act decisively and responsively to currency fluctuations in the North American market,” said Joe Lawrence, Porsche Canada’s CEO. “Our status as an independent subsidiary since 2008 has greatly strengthened our voice in Stuttgart, allowing us to deliver unprecedented levels of value to Canadian Porsche buyers.”

Base prices lowered by as much as $17,500
Pricing at historically low levels puts Porsche ownership within reach of more Canadians than ever before. The 2011 Boxster, for example, now starts at only $54,900; a V6-powered Cayenne is $55,300; a Panamera is now $86,600, while the Panamera S drops $11,900 to $103,200. Porsche’s iconic 911 sports car now starts at $90,100. The flagship 911 Turbo S is now $183,400, $16,600 less than before.

“The reduction in base prices results from the continued and consistent strength of the Canadian dollar,” said Lawrence. “With this latest move, the relationship between Canadian and U.S. prices has improved by an average of 8% across the lineup. No competitive brand has Canadian prices so closely aligned, across the board, to U.S. prices.”

Option prices reduced by 16%
In addition to reducing the price of vehicles, Porsche also moved to reduce the price of its factory-installed options. Indeed, the new prices contribute an additional $2,500 reduction to the price of a vehicle equipped with average options. For instance, the price of a 7-speed PDK double-clutch transmission on Boxster or Cayman drops from $4,660 to $3,910, while a power tilt/slide moonroof on Cayenne is reduced from $1,630 to $1,370.

“Porsche is renowned for its extensive customization options,” said Lawrence. “By reducing the price of options, we give customers more opportunity to apply more customization features and build exactly the car they want.”

He added: “Reduced option pricing, in combination with two price reductions in the last three years, enhanced levels of standard equipment and value option packages, means that Canadian buyers have benefitted greatly from the strong Canadian dollar and our responsiveness to its appreciation.”

More standard equipment for Cayenne
In addition to prices reduced by up to $5,200, Cayenne SUVs sold in Canada will also come with additional equipment. Starting in January, a HomeLink universal garage door opener and rear side airbags will be fitted as standard. The combined effect of the extra equipment and the price adjustment results in an effective 6.6% decrease in the price of a base-model Cayenne.

Cayman R priced at $75,600
Porsche also announced today the price of the Cayman R, a hardcore, stripped-down version of the Cayman S featuring 10 more horsepower, 55 kg less weight, and several interior and exterior styling changes. At $75,600, its extra power and performance come at a small premium to the Cayman S. Standard features unique to the Cayman R include contrasting side stripes, mirrors and rear wing; colour-keyed interior trim, lightweight wheels, a special sport suspension system and a limited-slip rear differential. It goes on sale this Spring.

A team of about 100 specialists at Porsche Exclusive takes care of everything from development to sales. Whether it be refined interior equipment or performance enhancements, all options from the Exclusive range and the vehicles themselves are not only developed in Weissach, but are also to a large extent integrated in the production process of a new Porsche.

A separate, extensive Exclusive catalogue, which also shows examples of completely individualised vehicles besides the range of options, is of course also available for each Porsche model. The customer discusses further special wishes directly with the Porsche dealership or the Exclusive customer advisors in the Zuffenhausen or Leipzig factories. Selected “flagship dealers” also offer this high-quality service abroad. Porsche Exclusive is additionally represented world-wide at a number of events and trade fairs.

In 2009 Porsche Exclusive added a further gem to its portfolio in the form of the 911 Sport Classic. Limited to 250 vehicles, this was a 911 which perfectly combined tradition and modernity. Designed with Porsche’s discerning customers in mind, the Porsche 911 Sport Classic with fixed rear wing in the “ducktail” shape first exhibited by 1973′s legendary Carrera RS 2.7 was a quite special highlight.

25 years of success are a good reason to celebrate. Porsche Exclusive will be doing this in a manner which reflects the high standards of the company within the company: with a strictly limited edition of a new 911 Speedster. In homage to the first Porsche model that bore the name Speedster – the 356 Speedster – the production run for the new model is limited to 356 cars. In the best tradition as a puristic, open-topped two-seater with low windscreen and double bubble on the convertible-top compartment lid.

With the 911 Speedster Porsche Exclusive will herald in a year chock-a-block with activities. With a new book on the Porsche Exclusive history, which will be available in the Porsche Museum shop from March 2011, a special Museum exhibition to run from March to May 2011 or a special Porsche Travel Club trip in June, for instance. Amongst other venues, Porsche Exclusive can be experienced live at the vintage vehicle grand prix at the Nürburgring in August 2011.

Porsche Canada announces Canadian currency credits

A couple of years ago, the Canadian dollar reached par with the mighty US dollar for the first time in close to 40 years. The disparity between currencies had been the primary excuse for higher commodity prices in Canada for a long time. With that excuse out of the way, manufacturers of all manner of products scrambled to justify their elevated Canadian prices while others worked to correct the pricing. Nowhere was this more visible than the auto industry and Porsche Canada was the first auto manufacturer to come to the consumer’s aid. This week, the Canadian dollar has taken a mighty leap and once again Porsche Canada is the first one to the table.

With factory cash back to dealers, the price of 2010 Porsche models has dropped by as much as 12.6% since 2007. These credits are available for all qualified buyers on all Porsche models.

Porsche. unexpected.

A roadside billboard displaying Porsche cars is not exactly something we would expect to see here in Canada, so one of these signs may just catch your eye. That is exactly what Porsche Canada is counting on.

Since pulling out of the Canadian International Autoshow, the Canadian arm of the legendary German sports car manufacturer has applied their marketing budget towards carefully targeted non-traditional marketing concepts. Invite only track and Porsche lifestyle immersion events. Private ski club experiences. Certainly a creative approach that one might almost call unexpected from a car company.

For their spring 2010 marketing campaign, Porsche Canada has picked up on that sentiment and has labelled the effort unexpected. To begin with, the ad spots will come to us through non-traditional venues. The first volley includes billboard advertising, something I can’t recall seeing in the Toronto area from Porsche. The content of the campaign draws consumers’ attention to Porsche virtues that one might not have thought about such as economy, technology and even value. We can expect to see these messages appearing in more mainstream newspapers, online and more billboards.

Porsche Canada sales up for February

When the economy is down, non essential products like sports cars often suffer a harder hit than more pedestrian autos. The past year or so in Canada fortunately wasn’t as bad for Porsche as it possibly could have been. As the economy is improving though, Porsche Canada’s fortunes are springing back nicely.

In February 2010, Porsche sold 110 new cars which is a 5.8% increase over February 2009. Included in there is the new Panamera, of which they sold 20 units. Not big numbers in relation to the big guys, it is certainly impressive for a vehicle that is not exactly a conventional Porsche.

Most telling of the economy is the growth of pre-owned sales from 25 units to 36 which is an all time record for February. Perhaps consumers are being more cautious with their money and buying a Porsche that is a year or two old rather than spending for a new one.
