2010 Dodge Challenger RT Classic: a back country beast

2010 Dodge Challenger RT Classic: a back country beast

It has been 2 years since I last drove a Hemi powered Dodge Challenger around the road course at Pocono Raceway and I still hadn’t gotten around to driving one on the street until a few weeks ago. I was interested to see if the car still turns heads here in Durham region, where its muscle car war rival the Camaro, is built. I was also looking forward to treating the neighbors to a bit of V8 rumble. Especially the GM engineer down the street who drive’s a 6 cylinder Camaro!

A while back we spent some time with a 6 cylinder Challenger SXT and found that the Mopar platform is by far the most family oriented of the 3 traditional domestic muscle car competitors. Unlike the Mustang and Camaro, the Challenger’s back seat comfortably seats 3 kids, even when 1 is a teenager. Likewise, family life is easily accommodated by the Challenger’s massive trunk that easily swallows a couple of hockey bags.

Some might argue that a muscle car isn’t a family car, but not everyone can afford a weekend only toy in the garage, but they still want to have some fun with their daily driver. The Challenger nicely combines the pony car heritage while offering a nice dose of practicality.

As Tom Williams found a few months back, the Challenger still has the power to crane necks, at least in the RT model. Our tester looked stunning in Deep Water Blue Pearl, which was perfectly accented by the classic black full length RT striping. Completing the look was the 20″ chrome wheels that sparkle like jewels beneath the deep blue. The combination did more than turn heads, it drew compliments almost everywhere I parked it.

For 2010, the Challenger RT boasts a 5.7 L HEMI V8 that produces 376 horsepower and a whopping 410 lb/ft of torque. In our case, that power made its way to the rear wheels through a 6 speed manual transmission. For you nostalgic types, that gearbox is made by Tremec, who also produced transmissions for the Trans Am race cars back in the day. Sadly, the shifter is a bit vague feeling, meaning that one actually has to pay attention to what gear one is in. On the bright side, with all that torque, it doesn’t really matter what gear you are in as there is enough grunt in any gear at just about any speed. So much so that engineers have included a feature that forces the driver to shift from first gear directly into fourth to allow for improved fuel economy. Personally, I could do without the skip shift feature, as I would rather enjoy second gear than get great gas mileage!

Around town, the RT feels like an old muscle car. It feels big and maybe a bit imposing (in a good way) but like most rear wheel drive cars it has a pretty tight turning circle, so parking lots aren’t as much of a stress factor as they are in a Camaro. On the highway, the big V8 just lopes along smoothly, getting surprisingly good fuel economy. In our week with the car, we managed to acheive 10 l/100 km combined city and highway driving and by no means was there any attempt made to save fuel. The HEMI sounds so great that one just has to crack the throttle at every possible opportunity.

On rural 2 lane roads, the suspension feels a little bit soft and the front end wanders a bit as the front end rises on moderate to hard acceleration. This feeling was a little disconcerting at first, but then I found myself on a series of deserted back country roads. Through the Mopar I began to channel my inner Kowalski as my afternoon drive begin to feel like a scene from Vanishing Point. On these empty backwater roads, the Challenger came to life. This is not a track car, it is a car that is just dying to gobble up vast stretches of country roads. Leaving a stop, hard on the throttle, the front end rises hard at the rear tires scramble for traction on the crumbly old tarmac. Up through the gears, the speedo jumps madly as the car rockets forward. When the wide twisty bits appear, using just enough brakes to unsettle the back end, the RT is easily steered with the throttle. Even onto a gravel surface, the softer suspension settings seem to be designed to soak up a bit of roughness as the car is completely drama free.

Through the back road experience, the sensory experience of retro inspired interior, V8 propulsion and an unmistakable roof line brought me back to the high school years when a few friends and I drove Mopars. There was even a white 1970 Challenger, just like Kowalski’s steed. In fact, Kowalski would feel right at home behind the wheel of the 2010 Challenger RT with one exception: The brakes work!

Team Mopar press release

June 6, 2010. Ron Beauchamp and the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries team arrived at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario for the Keystone Light 200, round one of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series expecting a challenging night from the competition. The hard fought duel on the track came as no surprise and Beauchamp was more than up to the task.

The #60 Mopar Parts Dodge was quick during the afternoon practice session and Beauchamp posted the fifth quickest time in qualifying. “It was a solid day early on for our team” said Beauchamp. “The car was a little loose but I knew it would race well, and a top-five starting spot is very good for the first race of the season” he added.

The green flag waved thirty minutes early due to an impending storm and Beauchamp wanted to make the the most of what might be a rain shortened race. “The #60 Mopar Parts Dodge was a little off in the early going and I did drop a few positions” said the driver. “Crew Chief Chris Couvillion made the call for an early pit stop for an adjustment and that really helped the handling” he stated.

As Beauchamp returned the #60 Mopar Parts Dodge to the fight he immediately began improving his position and was soon inside the top-five runners. “The car was performing perfectly” he said excitedly. “Then the racing well…..she got a little rough out there. Everybody knew the rain was close by and everyone was getting a little too aggressive and we got chopped across the nose by the #9 car. I was up to his door and he just came across and didn’t seem to care that I had the inside on him.”

The contact would set Beauchamp back in the field but with an improved handling #60 Mopar Parts Dodge he would again move toward the front of the field looking for a very good finish with the green, white checker finish that was looming after late caution flag. On the restart once again all competitors were extremely aggressive and Beauchamp was collected in another incident. “I got caught in something out there and I got hooked together with the #3 car and I couldn’t get loose” said the frustrated driver. “We did manage to shake loose and we came up with an eighth place finish, but the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries car was even better than the result. I just want to thank everybody for their support, and to my whole team who worked really hard all day. Now that we’ve got the first one underway, I’m even more pumped up about the rest of the season” he said excitedly.

Ron Beauchamp Jr and the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge Team will compete in all thirteen races on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. Round number two is next weekend, June 12th & 13th on the road course at Mosport International Raceway. All events this season will again be broadcast on TSN, the Keystone Light 200 airs at 2PM Eastern on Saturday June 12th. Team press release

May 31, 2010. As usual it has been a busy off season for Beauchamp Motorsports preparing their race cars for another grueling season in the NASCAR Canadian Tire series. Ron Beauchamp Jr and the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries team are ready to make their charge for the 2010 championship.

The busy off season for the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries crew had them in the race shop regularly to prepare the cars for the upcoming season. Once the weather allowed out the teams was at the race track to begin their pre season testing program. The final results won’t be in until the end of the race schedule, but what the team has accomplished during the testing process has them excited about the possibilities. “My Crew Chief Chris Couvillion and I worked on the cars all winter” said driver Ron Beauchamp Jr. “We were fast right off the truck and really pleased with how the car performed. We also know that we have to find ways to improve for this season and I think we’re on the right track” said the driver.

While finishing tied for second in the overall point standings and scoring eight top-five finishes including four podium finishes there is still a feeling they left something on the table. Despite always being in the hunt the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge Team was unable to score a race victory last year, something they intend on correcting this season. “It still frustrates me and the whole team that we were so close in a bunch of races but things just didn’t quite work out for us” said Beauchamp. “We know we’ll have a strong car every weekend and if we get that win early in the season that will really give this team a boost. Then watch out” added the excited driver.

Beauchamp Motorsports continues their long term partnership with Mopar Parts, Mobil 1 and Exide Batteries in 2010. And everyone involved agrees it is a union that has provided a tremendous foundation for the team’s success. “Working together with such good people who are incredibly supportive of our program is very special” said Ron Jr. “Everyone at Mopar & Dodge, Mobil 1, Exide Batteries they’re not just sponsors, they are partners in what we do. At all of the special events and appearances that we do so a lot of the race fans that come out are employees from these companies, and when they take the time to show their support it’s really something special” he added.

Ron Beauchamp Jr and the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge Team will compete in all thirteen races on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule beginning with round one taking place June 5th at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario. All events this season will again be broadcast on TSN. For more information about Team Mopar go online to www.mopar.ca and for series information check out www.nascar.ca.
