Canadian James Hinchcliffe impresses in test with Newman-Haas

SEBRING, Fla. (December 14, 2010) – Newman/Haas Racing (NHR) completed a trouble-free, two-day test at the 1.65-mile Sebring International Raceway road course today. Oriol Servia worked through the team’s long list of setup items to test while James Hinchcliffe continued to get acclimated to driving an Indy car.

“The cars ran faultlessly and we are very pleased with the pace of Oriol and James,” said Brian Lisles, general manager of Newman/Haas Racing. “We were able to get through a large part of our program despite the weather. Fifty-degree temperatures don’t sound very bad but our guys deserve accolades for working so long in near-arctic conditions. The wind was unbelievable and it was remarkably cold.”

Like Monday, the temperature never rose above the 50-degree Fahrenheit range but the gusty winds from Monday subsided. Servia completed 73 laps with a best lap time of 53.0 today while Hinchcliffe continued to get build speed in his second day of driving an Indy car. The 2010 Firestone Indy Lights series championship runner-up completed 81 laps with a best lap time of 52.8.

“The day went great like yesterday, just more of the same,” said Servia. “I’m very happy with the driving and I am feeling great; no rust. I expected to be much sorer today but I have to give thanks to my physical trainer; I feel great. We had a very specific agenda of a lot of big, different setup changes and I’m very happy that we went through almost all of them which seemed quite impossible with the limited amount of tires you are given for testing. I’m very happy that we made progress and found some direction on things and improved the car. It was a lot of fun. And it was as much fun, or more than I expected to work with James. He’s as funny as he comes across on Twitter and obviously he can pedal too. He was on a little different program but it showed how fast he can be. I’m hoping to work with him and the team in the future. Thank you to the Haas family and the Newman/Haas Racing team that once more made me feel at home. So many good things are happening in the IndyCar Series and I want to be part of it.”

“Today was a very successful day,” added Toronto native Hinchcliffe. “We managed to get me up to speed pretty quickly and got to the point where I was comfortable enough in the car that we could start doing some setup changes and some development work for the team. It was a huge and successful day in that respect. I’m very happy that it didn’t take two days to get up to a reasonable pace and that I was actually able to help the team with their test plans. I’m very grateful to Newman/Haas for the opportunity. It’s a great car to drive; a lot of fun. It really lets you push and hustle and I think it’s certainly something I’m looking to get back into in the future. It was great working with my engineer Bruno, and Oriol as well. He was a huge help over the two days. I can’t thank both of those guys enough, and the whole team for the chance.”

The 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series (IICS) season-opening Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will take place March 25-27. NHR took their first IICS victory, and 106th overall, in the event in 2008 with Graham Rahal behind the wheel.

LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. (December 1, 2010) – Eight-time Indy car champions Newman/Haas Racing (NHR) announced today that they will hold a two-day test at the 1.65-mile Sebring International Raceway course in Sebring, Fla. on December 13-14 in preparation for the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series season. Oriol Servia, who brought NHR a win and seven podium finishes, and James Hinchcliffe, who was runner-up to the 2010 Firestone Indy Lights champion will each test both days.

Servia, a native of Catalonia, Spain, has made 15 starts for NHR which include his first Indy car win (Montreal 2005) and pole (Surfers Paradise, Australia 2005) as well as a total of seven top-three, 11 top-five and 13 top-10 finishes. In 2005, Servia replaced NHR driver Bruno Junqueira, who suffered a season-ending injury at the Indy 500 on May 29, and then went on to finish second to teammate Sebastien Bourdais in the point standings after 11 events with the team. Servia returned to NHR in 2009 for four races with a season-best finish of fourth at Twin Ring Motegi.

“I am obviously very excited, not only to be back in a race car but to be back in a Newman/Haas car,” said Oriol Servia. “Every time I have driven a Newman/Haas car we have been able to make improvements and deliver results. They have some of the best engineers and the team members are among the hardest working in the sport. It’s the situation every driver wants; to just focus on making improvements with the car.”

Toronto native James Hinchcliffe, 23, will test an Indy car for the first time with NHR. He finished second in the 2010 Firestone Indy Lights season standings after wins in Long Beach, Edmonton and Chicagoland and poles in St. Petersburg, Long Beach, Watkins Glen and Edmonton. In total he earned eight podium finishes in 13 races. Hinchcliffe progressed through the ranks of the Rotax (2002), F2000 (2003), Formula BMW (2004), Star Mazda (2005), and Atlantic series (2006-2008) before joining the Firestone Indy Lights series in 2009. He also competed in a season of A1GP competition (2007).

“I can’t express how excited I am to get my first test in an Indy car!” said James Hinchcliffe. “I grew up watching Indy cars and always dreamed of one day driving one so this really is a dream come true. And to get my first taste of this car with a team the caliber of Newman/Haas Racing is really special. Their record speaks for itself and to get to work with them is a real privilege. It will certainly help me tackle the job of getting up to speed. I want to thank the Haas’ for this incredible opportunity. For sure this test is just the first step for me toward racing full time in the IZOD IndyCar Series. I will simply try to learn as much as I can and do the best job possible for the team.”

Fans invited to celebrate 25 years of racing

November 25, 2010 (Toronto) – Tickets to the 2011 Honda Indy Toronto are now on sale to the general public, a full eight months before the flagship event is set to take place. Owners of the event, which marks the 25th year of Indy car racing on the streets of Toronto, wanted to afford customers the chance to purchase tickets well in advance for special occasions, birthdays, milestones or as a holiday gift.

“We’re focused on making the Honda Indy Toronto accessible, entertaining and sustainable,” said Kevin Savoree, co-owner of the Honda Indy Toronto. “The Honda Indy Toronto is a must-attend event that provides memories for life. Offering tickets and race details in advance will help people make plans around the event.”

Celebrating 25 years of racing

The 2011 edition of the Honda Indy Toronto will mark 25 years of racing on the streets of Toronto. In 2009, Honda Canada Inc. took on title sponsorship of the event, marking a racing renaissance in Toronto, however the city has seen the world’s best drivers compete on the 11-turn, 2.84km street circuit at Exhibition Place since 1986. Many accomplished drivers have raced in Toronto, such as Bobby Rahal, winner of the inaugural race; Michael Andretti, all time race win leader with seven victories at Toronto; and Paul Tracy, hometown hero and two-time winner at Toronto.

New branding

The Honda Indy Toronto revealed today a commemorative logo to celebrate 25 years of racing in Toronto. The new logo was voted on by fans online through the event’s website, hondaindytoronto.com. In early October, organizers of the event posted four variations of the logo online and called upon its website visitors to vote on their favourite. The commemorative logo features the traditional Honda Indy Toronto branding alongside a graphic of the monumental Princes’ Gates at Exhibition Place with the words “Celebrate 25 Years of Racing” inscribed underneath.

“The fans have spoken and we feel they made the right decision,” said Charlie Johnstone, vice-president and general manager of Honda Indy Toronto. “This logo embodies the spirit of the race and we hope it will help get fans excited for the upcoming event.”

November 10, 2010 (Toronto) – The Honda Indy Toronto, taking place from July 8-10, will feature an exciting and diverse race schedule in 2011. In celebration of 25 years of racing on the streets of Toronto, Ontario’s single largest annual sporting event will feature the highest levels of Indy, stock, touring and, for the first time, exotic car racing.

The marquee attraction continues to be the IZOD IndyCar Series with its lineup of popular drivers including Dario Franchitti, series champion and winner of the 2010 Indy 500; Will Power, winner of the 2010 Honda Indy Toronto; Helio Castroneves and Scott Dixon, past winners of the Indy 500; Marco Andretti, son of Michael Andretti, driver with the most wins in Toronto; Danica Patrick, as well as Graham Rahal, son of Bobby Rahal, winner of the inaugural Indy car race in Toronto in 1986.

Back in the Molson Indy days, the Toronto Indy pretty much took over the city with parties and events. There was a buzz everywhere and just about everyone was talking about the Indy. Charlie Johnstone and the rest of the Honda Indy Toronto team have planned a week full of activities to build that buzz once again.

“This year’s edition of the Honda Indy Toronto is clearly setting a new bar in Canada in terms of on and off-track entertainment,” said Charlie Johnstone, general manager and vice president of Honda Indy Toronto. “The combination of athletes, cars, music and loads of interactive activities is second to none.”

Tuesday
The action begins today at noon at Toronto’s exciting Yonge – Dundas Square with the Honda Canada Media Pit Stop Challenge. Members of local media will battle for bragging rights as the fastest tire changing crew. Paul Tracy will be on hand from 12 to 1 pm.

At 5 pm, the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Autograph Session takes over Yonge-Dundas Square. Fans can meet all the series drivers including JR Fitzpatrick, Andrew Ranger, Jason Bowles and Ontario’s Caitlin Johnston.

Wednesday
Alex Tagliani will reveal the #77 Hot Wheels Indy car at Yonge-Dundas Square from 12:30 till 2.

From 5 to 6 pm, fans can meet Paul Tracy, Alex Tagliani and Canadian Indy Lights driver James Hinchcliffe for an autograph session at The Bay Queen Street.

Thursday
For the second year in a row, Shoot For A Cure teams up with the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation for the Honda Indy Toronto Walk Run ‘N Wheel-a-thon in support of spinal cure research. Participants and families will have the opportunity to do a 5km run, and a 2.8km walk and wheel to the finish line on the IndyCar circuit.

Thursday evening from 6 to 8 is the big party. The official IZOD Indycar street party will be hosted by Jamie Little and Matte Babel who will be joined by Indycar drivers. LA based Rival Sons will perform and the Great Canadian pit stop challenge will pit Canadian racers Paul Tracy and Alex Tagliani against each other. Just like in hockey, this will be a classic battle of Toronto vs. Montreal. The location for this one has not been revealed yet, but we’ll let you know when it is.

Moving uptown, the Canadian launch of the new TW Steel “Dario Franchitti Edition” Watch will take place at LA SWISS in the Yorkdale Shopping Mall at 8 pm.

At 8:30, Alex Tagliani and Paul Tracy are hosting the IZOD IndyCar Series Race to the Party After-Party, featuring the stars and legends of the series including Danica Patrick, Helio Castroneves, Marco Andretti, Tony Kanaan, Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Al Unser Jr. and Gil deFerran. Red carpet entrance is at 8:30 pm. This one is at Dolce Social Ballroom, 647 King St.

Maybe the biggest news of the week is that general admission is free thanks to the Ontario Honda Dealers association. Not only can everyone get in free, but grandstands are free too, meaning that fans can get a taste of the best seats in the house before deciding what ticket to buy for the rest of the weekend.

Canadian Tire has a long history of supporting racing in Canada and today they’ve announced major plans to step their involvement up several notches. Already in their fourth year as title sponsor of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, they have just signed on as an official sponsor of both the Honda Indy Toronto and Honda Indy Edmonton events.

In addition, while the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series runs as a support event for the Nationwide Series at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the company has added another nice surprise for Canadian’s on that weekend. Canadian racing star Ron Fellows will race the #88 Chevy Impala in the Nationwide race with Canadian Tire Sponsorship.

The racing series that will be competing during the Honda Indy Toronto race weekend include the IZOD IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights Series, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, Acura Sports Car Challenge, Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship, and the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series.

Hinchcliffe held off Californian Charlie Kimball by 0.8370 of a second to win the Indy Grand Prix of Long Beach. JK Vernay, who won the first two races of the season, finished third and Sebastian Saavedra in the No. 29 William Rast/Bryan Herta Autosport car was fourth.
