2010 Dodge Challenger RT Classic: a back country beast

2010 Dodge Challenger RT Classic: a back country beast

It has been 2 years since I last drove a Hemi powered Dodge Challenger around the road course at Pocono Raceway and I still hadn’t gotten around to driving one on the street until a few weeks ago. I was interested to see if the car still turns heads here in Durham region, where its muscle car war rival the Camaro, is built. I was also looking forward to treating the neighbors to a bit of V8 rumble. Especially the GM engineer down the street who drive’s a 6 cylinder Camaro!

A while back we spent some time with a 6 cylinder Challenger SXT and found that the Mopar platform is by far the most family oriented of the 3 traditional domestic muscle car competitors. Unlike the Mustang and Camaro, the Challenger’s back seat comfortably seats 3 kids, even when 1 is a teenager. Likewise, family life is easily accommodated by the Challenger’s massive trunk that easily swallows a couple of hockey bags.

Some might argue that a muscle car isn’t a family car, but not everyone can afford a weekend only toy in the garage, but they still want to have some fun with their daily driver. The Challenger nicely combines the pony car heritage while offering a nice dose of practicality.

As Tom Williams found a few months back, the Challenger still has the power to crane necks, at least in the RT model. Our tester looked stunning in Deep Water Blue Pearl, which was perfectly accented by the classic black full length RT striping. Completing the look was the 20″ chrome wheels that sparkle like jewels beneath the deep blue. The combination did more than turn heads, it drew compliments almost everywhere I parked it.

For 2010, the Challenger RT boasts a 5.7 L HEMI V8 that produces 376 horsepower and a whopping 410 lb/ft of torque. In our case, that power made its way to the rear wheels through a 6 speed manual transmission. For you nostalgic types, that gearbox is made by Tremec, who also produced transmissions for the Trans Am race cars back in the day. Sadly, the shifter is a bit vague feeling, meaning that one actually has to pay attention to what gear one is in. On the bright side, with all that torque, it doesn’t really matter what gear you are in as there is enough grunt in any gear at just about any speed. So much so that engineers have included a feature that forces the driver to shift from first gear directly into fourth to allow for improved fuel economy. Personally, I could do without the skip shift feature, as I would rather enjoy second gear than get great gas mileage!

Around town, the RT feels like an old muscle car. It feels big and maybe a bit imposing (in a good way) but like most rear wheel drive cars it has a pretty tight turning circle, so parking lots aren’t as much of a stress factor as they are in a Camaro. On the highway, the big V8 just lopes along smoothly, getting surprisingly good fuel economy. In our week with the car, we managed to acheive 10 l/100 km combined city and highway driving and by no means was there any attempt made to save fuel. The HEMI sounds so great that one just has to crack the throttle at every possible opportunity.

On rural 2 lane roads, the suspension feels a little bit soft and the front end wanders a bit as the front end rises on moderate to hard acceleration. This feeling was a little disconcerting at first, but then I found myself on a series of deserted back country roads. Through the Mopar I began to channel my inner Kowalski as my afternoon drive begin to feel like a scene from Vanishing Point. On these empty backwater roads, the Challenger came to life. This is not a track car, it is a car that is just dying to gobble up vast stretches of country roads. Leaving a stop, hard on the throttle, the front end rises hard at the rear tires scramble for traction on the crumbly old tarmac. Up through the gears, the speedo jumps madly as the car rockets forward. When the wide twisty bits appear, using just enough brakes to unsettle the back end, the RT is easily steered with the throttle. Even onto a gravel surface, the softer suspension settings seem to be designed to soak up a bit of roughness as the car is completely drama free.

[nggallery id=101]

Through the back road experience, the sensory experience of retro inspired interior, V8 propulsion and an unmistakable roof line brought me back to the high school years when a few friends and I drove Mopars. There was even a white 1970 Challenger, just like Kowalski’s steed. In fact, Kowalski would feel right at home behind the wheel of the 2010 Challenger RT with one exception: The brakes work!

October 29, 2010. Just over a month ago Castrol Edge Dodge driver DJ Kennington claimed the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Championship after closing out the final event at Kawartha Speedway with a third place finish. The result from Kawartha was his ninth podium finish of a remarkable season that saw the team prove their mettle every weekend of the grueling thirteen race series that took competitors from coast to coast. And with the championship smiles still clearly visible on their faces, the Castrol Edge Dodge team is about to begin an off season of celebration!

Almost immediately after the final checkered flag closed out the season and the Castrol Edge Dodge driver was confirmed as the series champion the phone calls, text messages and emails of congratulations began pouring in for the popular driver. “I was overwhelmed by the number of people that called or wrote me a note after we won the title” said Kennington. “I’m glad I was able to have my family there with me after the race and for so many of the people from Castrol to be there was special. They’ve been with me since the beginning and are part of this family too” he added.

This off season promises to be much different than those of the past for the Castrol Edge Dodge driver and Kennington couldn’t be happier about it. “Normally we’d do some clean-up work around the shop and eventually start getting things ready again next spring” explained Kennington. “This year it’s a whole different ball game. We’ve got the cars cleaned up and ready to go because they’re going to be on display an awful lot over the winter” he smiled.

The first event for the 2010 Champion and the Castrol Edge Dodge team will be attending is the Canadian Recognition VIP Reception to take place in the Toronto Distillery district on November 10th. Series sponsors and partners along with members of the media have been invited to this prestigious event. “This will be the first of many big events for the Castrol Edge team” said Kennington. “I’m proud of everyone involved with our team and I’m going to take every opportunity to recognize their contribution and say thank-you” said the driver.

Coming up later this year Kennington will be honoured on December 11th at the NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Awards Gala to be held at the newly opened NASCAR Hall of Fame where he will receive his Championship Ring. “That is going to be a special time” smiled Kennington. “There’s almost a whole week of activities planned for us, we’ll have our Castrol Edge Dodge on display and to be part of that kind of event with all the history of NASCAR surrounding us will be a once in a lifetime experience…..well, actually I wouldn’t mind experiencing it again next year” he exclaimed.

It promises to be a busy off season for the Castrol Edge Dodge team and their many race fans can follow along through a number of different ways. DJ Kennington finishes on the podium at Motoplex Speedway

Team press release

August 1, 2010. DJ Kennington, driver of the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge responded to the challenge in round number six of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Motoplex Speedway near Vernon, BC. Following a disappointing finish at Edmonton the team roared back by setting a new track qualifying record, leading the most race laps and scoring a podium finish to tighten up the overall championship battle.

The #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge team were focused and ready right from the afternoon practice session where Kennington posted the quickest lap time. He would follow it up by scorching a new lap record 18.167 second qualifying lap to secure the pole position for the 200 lap event. “This car has been fantastic all year and it was again” stated Kennington. “All the guys worked really hard to be ready and we were” he added.

When the green flag waved the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge was off like a rocket stretching the lead over the field. “I just can’t tell you how great the car was” said Kennington who seemed at times to expand his lead at will.

The race would run under green flag conditions for more than 100 laps at the start. During the first caution period the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge team took on fuel and left side tire and Kennington seemed to pick up right where he left off. “The car was just fantastic, I really don’t know what else to say” said the driver. “Everything appeared to be going out way” he concluded.

Following the second round of pit stops Kennington would again soon return to the race lead. However in the final third of the event the challengers appeared to get stronger. The #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge driver would surrender the lead on lap 236. “As the fuel burned off the car handling went off just a little bit” said Kennington.

A late race caution would allow the field to close up and give Kennington one more chance to gain positions with a green, white checker finish. When the race restarted Kennington pushed the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge hard trying to gain the lead. With so little time left in the race he would finish in third spot. “I tried to get him back” said Kennington. “The car wasn’t quite as strong at the end and the #22 must have found something on that last pit stop and he beat us” conceded the driver.

With another strong outing the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge team had a very successful day. With bonus points for leading a single lap and the most race laps Kennington closes to within seven points of the overall championship lead. “This was a solid points day for us” said the driver. “With all the support we get from Castrol, Mahindra Tractors, Hitachi Power Tools and everybody that helps us out, that’s what makes this possible” he stated.

The series continues concludes its three race schedule in western Canada with a midweek event Wednesday August 4th at Auto Clearing Speedway in Saskatoon, SK. Bourque gets airborne in Aaron’s Dream Machine

Bourque gets airborne in Aaron’s Dream Machine

Team press release

Vernon, BC (August 1, 2010) Pierre Bourque in the #00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Dodge looked to make another jump up in the overall standings of the Canadian NASAR series in round number six at Motoplex Speedway near Vernon, BC. It turned out that it was the #00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Dodge that made the biggest leap.

During afternoon practice the #00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Dodge team worked to improve the car and prepare for a very long 300 lap race. “The times on the track were so close amongst all the competitors during practice” said Bourque. “I felt that we had a good race set up and the car would be strong during the race” he added.

Through much of the early going Bourque’s prediction proved to be correct. “We got past a few cars and were up in around the top-ten” said the driver “And the #00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Dodge was living up to its name, the car felt great” he added.

Bourque continued to work his race strategy for the #00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Dodge and following the scheduled pit stops for fuel and tires the car appeared to improve yet again. “We just tried to continue with the plan” explained the driver. “Everything appeared to be going pretty well” he stated.

Fortunes in auto racing can however change quickly. Thus was the case with the #00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Dodge. Just past the halfway mark of the race as Bourque was exiting turn two contact took place and then he along with several other cars were collected in the incident. “I’m not even totally sure what happened” said the driver. “We were involved in an accident and the contact was so severe I got airborne. I’ve never experienced that in a race car before and it’s a shame that our night came to an end that way” he added.

Though the race came to a premature end for Bourque and the #00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Dodge they remain inside the top-ten of the overall standings. “We’re only 14 points from ninth, and 24 points out of eighth” said the driver. “And I know that the team will have another good race set up for us when we get to the next event in Saskatoon and hopefully we’ll be able to improve our position” he added.

Bourque battles just to finish at St. Eustache

Bourque battles just to finish at St. Eustache

Team press release

St. Eustache, Quebec. (July 4, 2010) Pierre Bourque and the #00 Telus Dodge team looked to continue their impressive early season showing in round number three of the Canadian NASCAR season at the Autodrome St. Eustache this past Saturday night. The evening turned into one of unexpected challenge.

As Bourque began practice in the #00 Telus Dodge it was his first opportunity to get acclimated to the tricky 4/10 mile track. “I like the track, it’s challenging” said Bourque “I talked a lot with my teammate DJ Kennington and just tried to improve with every lap” he added.

Bourque would qualify the #00 Telus Dodge nineteenth and looked to take a cautious approach but ran into difficulty even before the race started. “I had radio problems even before the pace laps” said the disappointed driver. “I was able to hear but couldn’t speak to the team” he stated.

The radio issues for Bourque got worse after he took the green flag in the #00 Telus Dodge. It was only a few laps in when the radio went totally caput” explained the driver.

The radio wasn’t the only difficulty Bourque had to deal with in his #00 Telus Dodge. “I couldn’t see anything” stated the driver simply. “You need the spotters help to get around this track so I had to come into the pits. I didn’t want to be the cause of somebody else’s problem or wreck myself” he added.

Bourque wheeled the #00 Telus Dodge to pit lane and the crew looked to diagnose the problem. “I’ve got to give the team a lot of credit for rigging something quickly to get it fixed, but we lost a half dozen laps” he explained.

A strong finish was impossible but Bourque returned the #00 Telus Dodge to competition looking for whatever positives he could make from the evening. “It’s a real morale killer when that happens because we expected to move up once the race started. We did pass a lot of cars, but because we were down that many laps early we could never reclaim the laps we lost” he concluded.

Despite the disappointing evening, Bourque remains in the top-ten of the overall championship sitting ninth. “We’ll put this one behind us, learn from it and I know we’ll be better at the next event in Toronto” ensured the driver.

Top Five finish for Ron Beauchamp and Team Mopar

Top Five finish for Ron Beauchamp and Team Mopar

Team press release

July 4, 2010. Ron Beauchamp and the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge team came to the Autodrome St Eustache for round number three of the NASCR Canadian Tire Series looking to rebound from a disappointing result at Mosport. With a concerted team effort all the Team Mopar achieved their wish.

Through the afternoon practice session the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge was a handful for Beauchamp. “We just seemed to be off in the set up” said the frustrated driver. “We normally run really well here but today was a battle to get the handling right” he added.

Frustration would continue through qualifying as Beauchamp was only able to manage the twelfth best time in the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge. Starting in the middle of the pack Team Mopar had to be flexible in their approach to the race. “We think with the changes made we’ll be better for the race as the track changes” said the driver. “We may have to make an early stop if things are still a bit off” he added.

In the early going the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge dropped even further back in the field but Beauchamp stuck with the plan. “It was tough early but as the track cooled down we got a little better” said the driver. As the race continued Beauchamp was able to begin moving forward.

Scheduled pit stops would also prove to be a challenge for the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge team. “We had a little trouble with our left side tire change” said Beauchamp. “But I’ve got to give credit to the guys on Team Mopar we kept battling through” he added.

In the closing laps Beauchamp appeared to have the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge settled up front and able to challenge. “It seemed that on long runs the car would change and become a handful” explained the driver. “Then when I had the chance to ease up and let things cool down, we’d get faster again” he stated.

Working hard right up to the checkered flag Beauchamp was able to obtain a fifth place finish for the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge. It was a satisfying result after a trying day. “After a tough outing last time I think we’ve definitely changed the momentum of our team and are moving forward” stated Ron Jr. “We had to fight for everything we got today and I’m really proud of how the guys worked so hard today” summed up the driver.

With the fifth place result Beauchamp and the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge now sit sixth in the overall championship.

Ron Beauchamp Jr and the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge Team will compete in all thirteen races on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. Round number four takes place Saturday July 17th on the streets of Toronto at Exhibition Place during the Toronto Indy weekend. All events this season will again be broadcast on TSN, the St. Eustache event airs Saturday July 10th at 11:30AM. DJ Kennington wins St. Eustache round of NASCAR Canadian Tire Series

DJ Kennington wins St. Eustache round of NASCAR Canadian Tire Series

Team press release

July 4, 2010. DJ Kennington, driver of the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge was unable to take the lead until very late in round number three of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series this past Saturday night at the Autodrome St. Eustache. However Kennington would lead when it counted and score his second race win of the season and take over the overall championship points lead.

During afternoon practice the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge proved to be handful even though Kennington was fourth quickest. “We had a problem with the a suspension piece rubbing on the right front tire but he Castrol Crew got it fixed up for qualifying” said the driver. “After the repairs we scored the third starting spot for the race” he added.

In the early part of the race Kennington maintained a strong pace and kept in touch with the front pack of cars. “I didn’t want to race too hard too early and use up the car so I just stayed patient to see how things developed” said Kennington.

The #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge team continued this approach as scheduled pit stops occurred and though he would shuffle back in the pack DJ was able to move back up toward the front of the field. “The car was pretty consistent but some of the guys were running pretty hard and I wasn’t sure that I’d be able to get back to the lead” he stated.

In the second half of the race Kennington moved back up to second position and closed up on the race leader looking for an opportunity to pass. “I worked pretty hard on the #22 car but just couldn’t get by him” said the driver. “Then I dropped back into third spot and just wanted to hold on to a podium position and bring the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge home and make it a good championship points day” he added.

With only two laps remaining Kennington would benefit from the aggressive racing between the #22 and the #02 who came together and slid up the race track. Kennington seized the opportunity to push the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors/Hitachi Tools Dodge into the lead and claim the victory, his second of the season. “I was just hanging on in those final few laps” said the thankful driver afterwards. “Those guys were racing for position and we happened to be in the right spot to take advantage when they had troubles. I’m so happy for the whole team that worked really hard again today. This win is for Rick Williams, who we lost recently and for my friend Bob Hewitt. I’ve got to thank Castrol, Mahindra Tractors, Hitachi Power Tools and everybody who helps us out. We really appreciate all your support” he concluded.

You can watch DJ Kennington’s victory in round number three of the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series can be seen on TSN this coming Saturday, July 10th beginning at 11:30AM Eastern Time.

Joey McColm crashes out of season opener 300m from the finish

Joey McColm crashes out of season opener 300m from the finish

June 5, 2010, KOMOKA, ON – Joey McColm’s career-best NASCAR race in the Canadian Tire Series opener at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario, was ruined on the last lap Saturday night. The Ajax, Ontario, driver appeared destined for a podium result when contact with another car sent him careening into the outside wall.

The UltimateDrivers.ca Dodge suffered heavy damage, and McColm was unable to finish. The official tally shows McColm 13th, but the young talent feels he deserved better. “We had a great car at the end of the race,” said McColm. “It’s hard to explain how disappointing that crash was.

“Our team came into this season with so much enthusiasm. We’ve added Ultimate Drivers and WATCH IT! as sponsors, and the cars are the best they’ve ever been. We’ll rebound from tonight’s crash, but a top-three finish would have been awesome.”

McColm qualified 13th in the competitive Canadian Tire Series field, but the team remained confident they could perform. Crew chief John Fletcher joked before the race that they could make the 13th starting spot lucky.

Pending rain caused various race strategies, but McColm’s pit crew worked well on pit road. In the race’s closing laps McColm found himself well inside the top-10.

The final restart with just a couple laps remaining led to carnage on the fast 1/2 mile speedway. McColm dodged a first mishap in turn one, and he emerged from the melee in the top five. Race officials allowed the race to stay under a green flag condition for drivers to determine the outcome on track. With just two corners remaining, McColm made contact with another car and crashed hard into the back stretch wall..

He fell from third to 13th in the blink of an eye. The UltimateDrivers.ca Dodge was unable to complete the final 300 meters.

“We’ll rebound and head to the Mosport road course for next weekend’s race,” said McColm. “I feel like our program is really coming along on the road courses, and I’ve been anxious to get to Mosport all winter. I started racing on oval tracks, but I’m starting to feel like we’re more competitive on the road courses recently.

“It’s exciting how fast the car was. We just need some luck to go with our speed.”

DJ Kennington wins NCATS season opener at Delaware Speedway

DJ Kennington wins NCATS season opener at Delaware Speedway

June 6, 2010. St. Thomas, Ontario’s DJ Kennington, driver of the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge put name at the top of the contenders for the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Championship with a victory in race number one of the season. At the Keystone Light 200 Saturday evening at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario Kennington made it his second consecutive victory at his home racetrack.

The day started off with a huge challenge for the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge team when after only five laps of practice a problem was noticed with the motor. Not wanting to take any chances the team swapped engines and were ready to make their scheduled qualifying run. Kennington set the tone when he put in a blistering lap of 19.22 seconds and scored pole position with an average speed of 93.652 MPH around the half mile oval. “What an effort by the whole team” said Kennington. “All my guys worked so hard that was a great reward for their efforts” he added.

As the green flag waved and wet weather loomed Kennington took off in the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge and had little trouble leading the first seventy five laps of the scheduled 200. “I think that Castrol Edge gave us an edge” he smiled and stated. “The car was so good right from the start of the race. It’s a great feeling as a driver”.

Rain was looming around the track and the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge team debated when to make their scheduled pit stops. “We weren’t sure if we’d get the all the laps in but as we got close to half way we decided to make our stop so we’d still have to time to get back toward the front” explained Kennington.

Deep in the field the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge driver then had to avoid the many racing incidents. “It got a little wild sometimes” said Kennington but I just kept going and pretty soon we were back up at the front”. he added.

Kennington would take over the lead for good on lap 160 but a late race caution period made things tense. The event would end under a green, white checker sprint and Kennington faced a hard charging #84 car. “I just took off and we body slammed pretty good going into corner one” said the driver. “But he went a bit high going into turn three and we managed to hang on for the win.

It’s just feels so good to win here at home” stated the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge driver. “When you have a day like we did you really find out how many friends you’ve got and we’ve got a lot of them. I just want to thank everybody on the team, our great support as always from Castrol, Mahindra Tractors, Contact Welding, and Hitachi Tools who have come on board with us this year. This is a fantastic way to start off the season” he concluded.

Best ever finish for Pierre Bourque

Best ever finish for Pierre Bourque

Team press release

London, ON. (June 6, 2010) NASCAR Driver Pierre Bourque began his 2010 Canadian NASCAR racing season this past Saturday at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario in the Keystone Light 200. Bourque along with the #00 Telus Dodge team worked exhaustively throughout the entire day to improve the handling and performance of the race car and achieve a strong finish to start the season. Their efforts were rewarded with his best ever series result.

New this season Pierre’s #00 Telus Dodge entry is fielded by DJK Motorsports. Moving to a new team presents challenges for a driver to communicate to his new team how the car is handling and what changes are necessary to achieve maximum results. This process takes time and it was a struggle for the #00 Telus Dodge team early in the day. Bourque would begin the 200 lap feature event from the tail end of the field.

“I didn’t start well today, but wasn’t at all discouraged because the team was working so hard, they worked as a team and I knew we could only get better” said the driver. Bourque would go down a lap to the leaders but did regain it after improving on every circuit around the half mile oval and staying away from the many incidents on the track.

As the laps ticked away and rain showers were looming Bourque continued to maintain as consistent and quick a pace as he could in the #00 Telus Dodge and his efforts were rewarded. A late caution period set the field up for a green, white checker finish and Bourque took advantage of the situation. As cars were colliding ahead of him Pierre was able to gain spots right up until the final lap and concluded the race with a sixth place finish.

At the conclusion of the race Pierre Bourque was extremely pleased with the efforts of the entire #00 Telus Dodge team and very pleased about their first effort of the 2010 season together. “Not only was it was a lot of fun to start from the back and finish where I did, but it’s the very best finish that I’ve ever had in the series, so to start off the season, what more could I ask for”
