The 2016 edition of the Dakar Rally is off to a rough start, as 11 spectators were injured when a car crashed into a group of people during the prologue.
The prologue is essentially a display run, which happens before the first competitive stage. The accident caused the cancelling of the first stage.
The vehicle involved was a MINI Cooper being driven by Guo Meiling, who is the first Chinese woman to ever compete in the famously difficult rally.
Reports say that 11 people were injured, including a man and his young son, who are in serious condition in an Argentinian hospital.
There are no Canadians competing in the Dakar this year.
