The opening event of the 2015 VLN Series at the Nurburgring has been red flagged and will not restart, following a horrific crash that has claimed the life of a spectator.
While entering the Flugplatz section of the historic track, the Nissan GTR Nismo of 23 year old Jann Mardenborough got airborne and flipped, landing upside down in a spectator area, killing one spectator and injuring several others.
Mardenborough was taken to hospital to be checked out and was released.
Nissan has issued a press release stating:
Today’s events have been a tragedy. We are all deeply shocked and saddened by these events and our immediate thoughts go to the deceased, those injured and their families and friends.
The team is fully co-operating with the race organisers to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into this incident.
The folks at Grid Media have posted video of the frightening crash on YouTube.
