Growing up around sports car racing, I was never exposed to drag racing, beyond watching NHRA racing on ABC’s Wide World of Sports in the Seventies. Beyond that though, the sport was never really on my radar. I learned a lot about the history of the sport when I visited with shop foreman Chris Bumpus at Don Garlits’ Museum of Drag Racing.
Of course I have long known that the reason that we have rear engine dragsters was because Garlits lost half a foot when the clutch exploded in a slingshot type car. I knew that guys still vintage race front engine cars, but I had no idea that they still actually compete in the things.
A new short film called Slingshot, by Les Mayhew, gets deep into the sport of front engine top fuel dragster racing. These cars, and their drivers, are batshit crazy. Mayhew’s many, many camera angles are captivating!
If you love auto racing of any form, this is a must watch.
