In general, most of those in racing feel that team orders, the practice of telling drivers just how competitive they can be with their team mates, are a bad thing. It is always more honest and exciting to let the drivers have at it and race each other.
The other side to that concept however is that racers will be racers and no rules means no space is given, which can be disastrous for a team’s championship aspirations.
Volvo’s Polestar team in the Swedish Touring Car Championship does not issue team orders. This means they have lots of great camera footage of Robert Dahlgren, Fredrik Ekblom and Thed Björk playing bumper cars with their race cars from the 2014 season.
No quarter given. Ever.
