The pothole is the bane of the modern motorist. They’ve been around forever, but back in the good old days of 75 series tires, it was rare to see much in the way of damage. In today’s world however, where pretty much every car on the road is available with low profile tires, the damage resulting from a pothole hit can run into the thousands of dollars.
The new Ford Fusion Sport is equipped with some crazy technology that senses the presence of a pothole in milliseconds and sends a signal to the shock absorber of a front wheel which is about to drop into the hole. The shock then retracts, pulling the wheel up and away from the road surface to prevent an impact.
Usually this type of suspension trickery is devoted to creating ride characteristics which are both comfortable and yet offer superior handling. In this case, the development could have a direct impact on the lifetime operating costs of a vehicle.
