After 24 hours of drama, the most exciting part of this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona came with less than a dozen minutes to go. While there were other podium battles happening around the track, the Corvette Racing machines were running 1-2 and were given the green light to take the gloves off. The team allowed Oliver Gavin and Antonio Garcia to race each other for the lead, provided they didn’t do “anything too risky.”
With total trust and respect for each other and the team, Gavin and Garcia then put on a show that had the normally quiet media room abuzz with cheers as the duo passed and re-passed for the lead.
The excitement was perfect, given the buzz that had surrounded the entire event all weekend. Sports car racing is indeed back!
