From the Vancouver archives comes this shot of the legendary Blitzen Benz, taken by William John Cairns in 1913. Land speed record hunter “Wild Bob” Burman had come to the Vancouver area to a race track called Minoru Park in an effort to break an existing record set by Barney Oldfield.
On July 26th., 1913, the Michigan driver covered the mile in 50 4/5 seconds, setting a new Canadian record.
Of six of these monsterous machines that were built, only two remain, including the one seen above. At Pebble Beach in 2009, Mercedes-Benz museum staff started the beast for cameras.
