As Ontario Provincial Police media relations officer Sgt. Kerry Schmidt tells a CTV news reporter that “We are ready all the time”, a sharp bang can be heard in the background as a BMW plows into the back of another car.
The interview is happening in a spot well off to the side of the collector lanes of Highway 401 westbound at the 403, next to a holiday R.I.D.E. checkpoint, when the collision occurs in the express lanes. Schmidt points out that “this is the crisis right now. The highways are dry, clear and bare and drivers are not looking to see what’s going on.” “People are just not focusing on driving.”
Nobody appears to be injured, but it was a big hit and you can see how shaken up the BMW passenger is from the experience of having an airbag blow right in her face. While we don’t see what led up to the incident, it is clear that if both drivers had been paying attention and using their vision, it could have been avoided.
