From the YouTube archives comes a promo clip for a television series called GT RACER. The show followed gentlemen racers who traveled the globe racing at historic locations like Silverstone, Le Mans and the Nurburgring.
On tap for season two was a stop at the famous La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico. Originally launched in 1950 to promote a newly opened highway, La Carrera is a throwback to an earlier time. A high speed road rally in the style of the Targa Florio and Mille Miglia, La Carrera is one of the most thrilling events in motorsport. It is also one of the most dangerous.
Canadian videographer Danny Bailey was part of the crew that shot GT RACER says:
Unfortunately my summer of 2008 was quite busy but I was able to shoot Magny-Cours and the LaCarrera Panamericana race in Mexico. We started the rally just north of Guatemala and within 8 days raced north every day until we ended up in Laredo Mexico. We had two film crews with personal drivers that were past driver’s in the event. The year we covered this classic race was 2008 and the Mexican Police had just taken possession of a handful of new 2009 Chargers for cruisers. After every stage we’d hook up the with the Federal Policia and blast off escorted at break neck speeds.
