Downtown Toronto has become ground zero for the taxi industry’s war on Uber. Hundreds of cabbies today have descended upon the streets surrounding city hall to protest the service, which allows Joe Public to use their cell phone and personal vehicle to provide rides for a fee. Taxi drivers are complaining that Uber drivers operate outside the law and cutting their profits.
The scene turned ugly about an hour ago when a protesting cabbie started banging on the window of a Honda Civic, claiming it was an Uber X. The driver of the Civic, likely fearing for his safety, drives off, which prompts the crazy cab driver to grab hold and go for a ride down Bay Street towards Queen. He then informs the cameras that the guy “has no insurance”.
The irony of this who situation is that many downtown cab drivers are also Uber drivers on the side.
