Many traditional media companies have had a difficult time evolving with the rapidly changing business digital era, having business models that aren’t flexible enough to adapt. Particularly challenging for most is the reality that if your business has a massive archive of content, you HAVE to share it and you have to share it for free. That doesn’t mean that you have to share everything for free, but you have to make some good stuff available. That goes against everything that traditional media believes, which is part of the problem.
British Pathé is about as traditional as they come and yet they get it more than most. Having been around since the 1890’s, the company was the source of news for many Brits, who would visit their local theatres to see video footage of what was going on in the world. As one might expect, the organization’s video archives are simply massive. Their archives contain more than 85,000 videos. A good many of them are posted on British Pathé’s YouTube channel, with others available directly from the company.
Each month, British Pathé posts ‘new’ videos that stick to a theme. In January, that theme was motorsports. As you might expect, British Pathé has tons of fantastic motorsports footage from the earliest days of racing, much of which has not been seen in years. This puts them in a unique position to rank the importance of the events that formed the motorsport world today. As a global company, they don’t forget about us over here in the colonies!
