It was the end of an era. The end of one of the greatest motor racing series ever conceived, not only in Canada, but around the world. The final round of the Players GM series, which pitted drivers against one another in supposedly identically prepared Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds.
It was a series that offered fantastic competition for the drivers, which equated to equally fantastic viewing for the fans. That competition produced some of the greatest names in modern sports car racing. Scott Maxwell. David Empringham. Ken Wilden. Richard Spenard. Ron Fellows and many more. The driving talent was second to none.
I say supposedly identical cars, because throughout the series there were stories of engine management trickery, which to this day, some competitors deny. While I have no inside knowledge, the different exhaust note of about a half a dozen cars was undeniable. Regardless, the series was one of the most exciting ever conceived.
